The Fourth
We had an awesome 4th of July. The heat was unbearable, the food was char-grilled, the mosquitoes were relentless, and the company was entertaining.
We had ribs, burgers, Angus hotdogs(very tasty), cantaloupe, watermelon, baked beans, and apple pie. One of the many reasons I love the south and would never live anywhere else: family backyard barbecues.
It has been so hot and dry here though, that Hattiesburg issued a burn ban in the city, so fireworks were a no-go this year. We finally got rain the end of last week. Ben and Leigha got to come down the entire week after the 4th, Kai was uncontrollably excited when his dad walked through the door. They are crazy about each other. Kai fell asleep on his daddy, something he hasn't done in a while.
It was a relaxing week for Ben. It needed to be. He is facing seven days of 12 hour shifts at work this week. I can't wait until he will be able to leave that place; a huge black hole sucking the life out of good people who only want to work to live, not live to work. Anyway, Kai and Leigha still fought like siblings but, toward the end of the week, Leigha wrote down her cell number for Kai so he could call her. Pretty amazing, seeing how she's eight and he's five.
Ben and I were able to go on a real date last week. Something that hasn't happened in a long, long time. It was fun, and we are looking forward to more days like that.
